Steel Stair Guardrail

Custom steel guardrails and handrail fabricated for a private apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The Story

The staircase itself is constructed in wood, while the guardrails were designed as continuous steel plate panels running along both sides of the stair and extending to the upper level.

Each guardrail is formed from a single steel plate, creating a bold architectural volume that contrasts with the lighter wooden steps. The steel was finished with a natural black patina and sealed with a protective wax, highlighting the raw character of the metal.

The project plays with material contrasts, where the deep tones of the patinated steel interact with the warm wood steps and the red brick wall, creating a strong visual dialogue between industrial metalwork and the historic texture of the space.
